Cattle play an important role in India's rural economy and dairy industry. To promote cattle protection and dairy farming, several state governments have introduced schemes that provide financial assistance for establishing gaushalas.
Under these schemes, farmers, institutions, and organizations can receive government subsidy up to ₹10 lakh for building and managing gaushalas.
The Madhya Pradesh government introduced the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Kamdhenu Scheme to encourage gaushala establishment. Farmers who set up gaushalas with around 25 cows can receive financial support.
Similarly, the Rajasthan government has launched the Gaushala Development Scheme that provides grants for infrastructure such as sheds, water tanks, boundary walls and fodder storage.
States like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are also promoting modern gaushalas that integrate dairy production, organic farming and biogas generation.
Establishing a gaushala can generate income through milk production, organic manure, vermicompost, and bio-products from cow dung and urine.
These schemes are designed to support livestock farmers, promote rural employment and strengthen sustainable agriculture.
